When The Neighbors See Your Underwear via Dancing the Polka With Miss El Cajon July 23rd, 2008 at 13:28

My latest column is out and as has become the custom I've decided to read it to you. In listening back to it, though, I sound a bit odd. I sound angry. I am trying to annunciate, but it's not working. The traces of my Texas accent cause me to mumble and slur words (listen to me slaughter the word "generally" at the end of the recording), so I was trying to make everything clear. In so doing, I've made everything slightly bitter, as well.Obviously, my career as a professional voice artist won't be getting under way any time soon. One benefit to the audio version, though, is that I chose to read it as I wrote it. The published version is missing a sentence because my editor was concerned it would offend. That sentence is: "(I am) enjoying the fact that they show naked breasts on primetime...

Managers Failing Expectations via t2 business solutions blog July 23rd, 2008 at 12:03

image An interesting article on the ILM website explains how Managers across Europe are failing to meet their employee's expectations. The Krauthammer Observatory 2008 report reveals that  workers have clearly defined expectations of what their managers should be doing, but there are gaps between this and what actually happens. It found that 91% of staff think their managers should help them analyse work difficulties, however, only 47% of them said that this actually happens. Three-quarters of employees also wanted their managers to "create the right context" before implementing change in the workplace, but just one-third found this was the case.A survey by Learndirect Business also found that many employees feel they have skills which could be going to waste as managers have not...

Frame service for our pet portraits! via Pet Portraits by Melanie Phillips 'Portraits Work in Progress' July 23rd, 2008 at 11:12

image Things have been very busy here in the studio, there have been changes a plenty and for the better we hope. Nick and i are now collaborating with a local framer to frame our pet portraits for us. We are primarily providing frames for the UK market but hope to expand this to the US next year. An example frame hanging in our home We have found a lovely framer in the Powys mountains, just over an hours drive from here who is not only providing us with frames but also mounts/matts and backing boards too. This means we can provide our portraits as ‘Frame Ready Portraits’ - with everything you need to place the portrait into a frame you have purchased from a shop or store. Alternatively you can take it to your local framer to be framed. Frame Ready Portraits - this is one of Nicks...

Ponty Park Wins Green Flag Award via Green Drinks Rhondda Cynon Taff » Green Drinks Rhondda Cynon Taff July 23rd, 2008 at 10:27

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd, has won the prestigious Green Flag Award for the fourth year running. The award is the national standard for quality parks and green spaces, recognising excellence in the management and delivery of service within the Parks sector. Ynysangharad Park is one of only 19 sites across Wales to achieve the honour this year. Winning the Green Flag Award is the culmination of another busy year for the park, which has hosted events such as the Teddy Bears Picnic and Parti Ponty, attended by thousands of children earlier this month. It also hosted some of the events during Ponty’s Big Weekend, the entertainment extravaganza from July 18-21, with singer Rhydian Roberts among the star performers. From August 1-3, 2008, the park will be the setting for...

Assembly Diary via Leighton Andrews July 23rd, 2008 at 09:34

Last week the First Minister published the Assembly’s legislative programme for next year, building on the One Wales programme for government. One Wales set out our vision of a fair and just Wales, where everyone can live free from poverty and discrimination. We made a commitment to develop Wales-specific solutions to tackle child poverty. Our next step is to bring forward an Assembly Measure to provide greater support to children and families experiencing poverty. It will include a number of initiatives such as a duty on public agencies to demonstrate their contribution to ending child poverty and to provide free childcare places and other early years’ services in specific areas. As regards older people, One Wales made clear our commitment to help people to be independent and...

The wrong trousers via Peter Black AM July 23rd, 2008 at 08:06

The Welsh Conservatives returned to form yesterday blaming the Welsh Assembly Government for a 154% increase in the bonuses paid to top civil servants over the last five years, even though it is not a devolved matter and despite the fact that the bonus system was introduced by a Tory Government in 1996.It may well be of course that these particular bonuses are difficult to defend given the state of Welsh public services in comparison to England however for some reason the Tories failed to draw the obvious conclusion. If we want the salaries of Welsh civil servants to reflect local performance then we need to have our own independent civil service. In many ways this over-concentration on the remuneration of public officials and the cost of pot plants and plastic bags can be quite...

Is etholiad Cyngor Tref Caernarfon, ward Menai via blogMenai July 22nd, 2008 at 23:41

Ddydd Iau - yr un diwrnod ag is etholiad seneddol Glasgow East, bydd is etholiad arall ychydig fwy lleol i mi beth bynnag - un am sedd ar Gyngor Tref Caernarfon. Mae is etholiad Glasgow East yn un gwirioneddol arwyddocaol wrth gwrs - pe byddai Llafur yn colli, gallai arwain yn hawdd at ddiwedd gyrfa wleidyddol Gordon Brown. Hwyrach fy mod yn blwyfol, ond mae'r etholiad Menai o lawer mwy o ddiddordeb i mi. Os bydd Alun Roberts, ymgeisydd y Blaid yn curo yr annibynwraig Mair Williams yna bydd gan y Blaid wyth o'r ddwy sedd ar bymtheg ar y cyngor tref. Mae gan y Blaid dair o bump sedd Cyngor Sir y dref hefyd. Hyd y gwn i dyma fyddai'r sefyllfa cryfaf i'r Blaid yn hanes gwleidyddiaeth tref Caernarfon erioed. Rydym wedi dod ymhell ers y noson etholiad cyffredinol 1997 pan gafodd bocsus...

Sun Worshippers of Aberdare via Aberdare Blog July 22nd, 2008 at 23:04

image An Icarean sculpture seems like a good idea! Aberdare was bathed in some sun today and the forecast remains good for the rest of the week. We have added photos of Tom Harvey’s Fall of Icarus to the Gallery. Sculpted in Indian Cedar and measuring 9′ tall, the sculpture forms part of the Cwmaman Sculpture Trail and is located near St Joseph’s Church, Cwmaman. It is a pleasure to be able to publish photos of local sculptures. The Cwmaman Sculpture Trail offers a very pleasant walk in a beautiful nook of the Valley reclaimed from former industrial......

How to Travel by Cargo Ship via A Welsh View July 22nd, 2008 at 21:32

image The Traveller's Notebook has a fascinating guide to travelling by cargo ship. I didn't realise that it was possible to travel by cargo ship, at least comfortably. It's not cheap though. It can cost between $80-$140 a day. And if you are feeling adventurous you can travel around the world. The trip takes between 110-120 days and takes you to Papeete in Tahiti, various sparsely populated and unspoiled islands in the South Pacific, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore then via the Suez Canal, before returning to Europe. There isn't a price listed on the website but it's probably not cheap....
