Mae Barack Obama yn gymharol ifanc, a newid oedd ei thema mawr yn yr etholiad arlywyddol, ac yn ddi amau mi fydd yna newid. Ond tybed os y bydd dwy o'r prif swyddi economaidd yn mynd i ddau ddyn mewn oed mawr. Gallai Paul Volcker yn hawdd gael ei roi'n gyfrifol am system bancio canolog America - Y Fed, a gallai Warren Buffet gael ei hun yn gyfrifol am y trysorlys. Mae Mr Volker yn ei wythdegau a Mr Buffet yn 78. Ond hen neu beidio, mae'n anodd meddwl am bar mwy galluog yn unrhyw le i ddelio gyda'r llanast economaidd a adawyd ar ei ol gan neo ryddfrydiaeth...
Some time ago we discussed the importance of co-operation as the basis for a fair society. We used the example of a local village shop because the first Welsh co-operative store was established near Aberdare by working people.
Today we experienced something of an epiphanic moment reading the views of Paul A. Baran in his essay entitled “Better Smaller But Better”. It was published in Monthly Review in July 1950, originally under the pen-name Historicus.
Baran discusses ‘Co-Operation on the Left’ in a post-war American society where capitalism seemed unassailable and omnipotent. He discusses the methods used to preserve and strengthen capitalism in America as it was then, 1950.
Here’s how Baran puts it, any emphasis in the text is ours …

A while back I visited the Lorraine motel, Memphis, where Martin Luther King was assassinated.

The other night, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a friend’s apartment to watch a couple of movies with a few friends. What was most eventful about this evening however, was that one of the people who resided at this apartment was a native of Palestine, and had witnessed many incidents throughout the conflict between Israel and his country. Of course, the night was good fun, but I couldn't help myself asking the Palestinian about his experiences in Israel. So naturally, be began talking about the situation (discussing America's involvement also), and by the time I thought we had talked about every detail possible, he showed me what appeared to be a 74 page document. Little did I know that this document was not supposed to be read by the public, as it was for political use...
Summer hols booked. Or anyway, flight to Washington (DC) and car hire for road trip to Memphis. We’re looking at running down the Alleghenies for some white water rafting, something Helen first persuaded me to do in 2001 (shortly before 9/11), on the Ocoee River, part of the the Atlanta Olympics course, in Tennessee. We rafted again in Spain in 2002, when we stayed in the Parador de Vielha; I bounced out of the dinghy that time. The Vielha Parador, by the way, had a very good restaurant and an even more fantastic menu which in English included:
Attacked of fresh pasta(cash), sepia and leeks
Eggs in jumble with girgolas and you live(inhabit) tender and
Loin Code to Ticken
What else? On the way south and west from Washington, black bears and civil war landmarks I think. Need to do...
