It’s been three years since we first started blogging about Aberdare and now there are three thousand photos in the Gallery.
Put one foot in front of the other and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. Before you know it, you’ve trod your way so far down a path, it becomes easier to continue forward, than re-trace your steps backwards.
The photographic ‘themes’ in the Gallery started in Aberdare… honest guv! In a town rich with Chapels and Churches it was inevitable we would start taking photographs across the Valley, then across the Valleys, then farther afield.
And so the pattern is repeated with our other photographic themes. First Aberdare, then out there!
The word we are looking for here is serendipity. We have trod this path as accidental photographer...

As some of you will have no doubt noticed, I’ve set my Twitter updates to appear on my blog every 24 hours via Loudtwitter. I set this up partly because there can be weeks that go by when I don’t update my blog - or can’t get my thoughts out in coherent sentences - but the simplicity of one-line blogging updates is probably preferable to an occasional drought of content.
However, I’ve now received my first complaint from a loyal (and uber-important!) reader.
So, loyal subjects and readers, I’ve disabled the Twitter updates on my main blog (although they’ll still appear on t’other blog). If you’re obsessed with the minutiae of my life, you can always follow my Twitter or Facebook updates direct, or let me know what you think!...

The Cardiff Arms in Hirwaun High Street is set to re open soon after extensive refurbishment.
New owners Julian and Annie Barfield bought the closed down and neglected public house in August of this year aim to once again make the Cardiff Arms a social hub of the village.
‘Currently we are undergoing refurbishment of the building, stripping back layers of paint and grime to reveal the full potential of this once grand building’.
When the Cardiff Arms re-opens its doors to customers they will walk into a fresh and airy bar area that will not only be clean, warm and inviting but also one that will prove a perfect setting for socialising with family and friends, with natural wall colourings and lighting thus helping to create a light, bright and friendly atmosphere.
Julian’s family...

A planning application to build over one hundred houses on the Gloucesters site was rejected by Rhondda Cynon Taff Council earlier this year. The developer, Piper Homes, appealed against that decision and therefore the Welsh Assembly is considering the appeal in the form of a Public Inquiry.
The Public Inquiry is schedule for 10am on Tuesday 23rd October 2007 at Hirwaun Community Centre. The appeal may run over 2 days.
The Gloucesters site is situated right next door to the remains of the old Hirwaun Iron Works. The Ironworks/Gloucesters comprises an area of land in the centre of the village which is widely used by villagers for recreation walking, dog walking, horse riding, cycling etc. Perhaps most importantly, the whole area is a giant adventure playground for children. The...

Warnings not to downgrade services have followed the announcement of a review of the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr.
The Health Minister Edwina Hart has announced that Professor Mansel Aylward will conduct a review of services at the hospital. She has now also dissolved the Pontypridd and Rhondda NHS Trust, and North Glamorgan NHS Trust, and confirmed the establishment of a single NHS Trust merging the two bodies. A Shadow Board is due to be in place by December 2007, with full implementation of the Trust merger by the 1st April 2008.
Plaid Assembly Member Leanne Wood has noted the Minister’s review but warned that services for people at the Heads of the Valley must not be downgraded. She commented:
“I have said many times that I will oppose any proposals which would cut...

As can be seen, an update has been a long time coming.
A lot of things have been different for me in the past few months and hence I haven’t been able to put my thoughts into words as coherantly as I once could, so I have abstained.
Sterility has been playing on my mind since things started to change and I’m adamant that I don’t want to remain inproductive, at least not for any prolonged period of time.
This hiatus may be over in a shorter time than it has taken for me to announce it, but I do want to keep my options open for the time being, and also leaving this place dormant without so much as an explaination does play on my mind, I don’t want to forever lose a significant slice of the readership that I have established over such a long time.
Stick with me on...

A staggering 440 social care staff from across Rhondda Cynon Taf have celebrated attaining qualifications - and heard first hand the massive difference they make in the lives of others.
The staff received their NVQ certificates and degree diplomas from Cllr Annette Davies, Cabinet member for Equality and Children’s Services, at Rhondda Heritage Park on October 9. Councillor John David, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Services, was also at the event to commend their achievements.
As well as being praised for their achievements, which demonstrate their commitment to their work, the staff heard from clients who highlighted how important the profession is.
Rachel Williams and Sharon Clack bravely took to the stage to describe the impact mental illnesses had on their lives, leaving them...

Senior Ponty Observer reporter Dave Edwards enjoyed a taste of the future when he received a surprise visit from Catering Direct’s Community Meals, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s in-house catering service.
Council staff and Cllr John David, Cabinet member for Older People, visited him on Friday to mark National Meals on Wheels Week.
As a resident in his sixties, Dave could be eligible to receive the delicious meals, prepared locally by cooks from fresh ingredients and delivered to thousands of residents, seven days a week.
To give him a sneak preview of the service he could be benefiting from, Cllr John David “served” Dave a delicious Friday special of fish, peas and potatoes with a trifle for dessert.
The visit was organised to demonstrate the quality of food available to Community...

Mid Wales Opera make a welcome return to the Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare when they perform Puccini’s La Bohème on Wednesday 7 November at 7.30pm.
La Bohème is one of Puccini’s most romantic and popular operas. Containing several of opera’s best-known arias and duets, La Bohème’s ravishingly beautiful music and the composer’s unique dramatic flair, combine brilliantly to portray the passions and laughter of the young bohemians in the story. Few other operas have its capacity to engage the audiences’ emotions so powerfully as the action swiftly and seamlessly flows from boisterous gaiety to heart-rending tragedy.
Set in Paris in 1830, La Bohème follows the lives and loves of a group of Bohemians residing in the Latin Quarter. Rodolfo, a poet living an impoverished life, meets...

Schoolchildren across Rhondda Cynon Taf are being challenged to design a poster to help publicise this year’s Nos Galan Races.
Organisers of the popular races - which are held every New Year’s Eve in Mountain Ash - have contacted primary schools across the borough, asking pupils to design a poster for the event. The winning artist will be awarded a prize for their school and their design will be included in the Nos Galan programme.
Around 5,000 people watched the races last year, when Welsh Athletics champ Rhys Williams was revealed as the ‘mystery runner’ who took the Nos Galan torch to the graveside of Guto Nyth Bran, in whose honours the races are held.
Councillor Graham Thomas, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said:...

This squirrel (or ‘nutter‘) was snapped near the enclosed play area in Aberdare Park.
He was jumping into the refuse bin, collecting scraps of food, jumping out again onto the nearby fence.
Then the little blighter would sit and finish his scrap of food… even posing a moment for a photo!
