boot sale treasure via beyond utility March 2nd, 2007 at 10:35

image I found treasure at the local boot sale in the form of four copies of a magazine called 'Practical Television'. They were from the early 50's, 1950-1954. Sadly the cover was busted on the first one but the contents were intact. The first edition was published in April 1950 and in the editorial at the front in concluded with:"Although paper for periodicals became de-rationed as from March 1st, production problems still make it difficult to ensure supplies."There is an article on page 21 entitled, Building the "Viewmaster": An Amateur Describes his Experiences in Building this Popular Home-constructor Set.In most of us is the desire to create, to see something grow under our hands, and be able to say, possibly with ill-concealed yet justifiable pride, "I built that"....Those of us who grew...

Arguments against Welsh independence via Smiling under Buses January 17th, 2007 at 11:18

According to my stats page, I've been recieving a considerable amount of visits to this blog from people Googling for 'arguments against scottish independence' (it's probably just Gordon Brown). Unfortunately, all they get is this page.Feeling a bit bad and not being able to help, I thought I'd better provide some arguments here in case someone is looking for arguments aginst Welsh independence. These arguments aren't mine by the way, but they're such important and vaild one's, I thought they are worth re-publishing.Argument 1: If Wales wasn't part of the Union, Dr Who would never have been filmed in Cardiff- Peter Hain (Secretary of State for Northen Ireland and Wales + Patron Saint of Sunbeds)Obviously this man doesn't have a vested interest in the continuation of the Union!Argument...

Proud to be British? Really? via Welsh Independence January 16th, 2007 at 20:22

It is ironic that former anti-Apartheid campaigner and de facto Governor of Wales, Peter Hain, believes the people of Wales should be proud of the role they played in building the British Empire. That anyone should be proud of an imperialist legacy is in itself sad and astounding, if not a little alarming. But for the people of Wales - England's first ever colony - to be proud of the systematic destruction of their language, the erosion of their culture and identity, the denial of their own history, the ravaging of their natural resources, the drowning of their valleys to supply water for English cities, and the economic decline of rural and industrial communities, is as humiliating as it is irrational. It’s time we started thinking for ourselves. It’s time we thought about what...

Welsh not British via Smiling under Buses October 19th, 2006 at 17:08

image I took the above photo before Wales' game against Slovakia in Cardiff. In the background you can see a banner with WelshNotBritish.com on it which is one of Cymuned's websites. The organisation uses occasions like internationals to highlight their campaigns. Here's Cymuned's Flickr group which has a lot of striking photo's! Strangley enough, Eric posted a stori on his blog under the heading Welsh not British this week, which tells a story and gives his view of the way that the BBC Sport treat 'us all' (everyone in Britain that is) as English, and explains how this leads to a certain disliking (to put it mildly) by the Welsh (and Scottish, and Irish and .....) towards English national teams. It would do this 'Welsh' woman no harm to have a read. (llongyfarchiadau Eric for being...

Welsh not British via Gwenu dan Fysiau October 19th, 2006 at 13:40

image Tynnais y llun uchod cyn gêm Cymru v Slofacia yng Nghaerdydd. Yn y cefndir fe welwch banner WelshNotBritish.com sef un o wefannau Cymuned. Mae'r mudiad yn defnyddio achlysuron fel gemau rhyngwladol i hyrwyddo eu hymgyrchoedd. Dyma gyfrif Flickr Cymuned sydd â llawer o luniau trawiadol arno! Yn rhyfedd ddigon, dyma Eric yn postio stori er ei flog o dan y pennawd Welsh not British yr wythnos hon, yn adrodd ei hanes a'i deimladau o'r modd mae'r BBC yn trin 'ni i gyd' (hynny yw pawb ym Mhrydain) fel Saeson, ac yn esbonio sut mae hyn yn arwain at deimlad o gasineb gan Gymry (ac Albanwyr, a Gwyddelod a.....) tuag at dimau cenedlaethol Lloegr. Efallai byddai'n syniad i'r 'Gymraes' hon ei ddarllen. (llongyfarchiadau Eric am dy enwi'n Flog y Mis ar gyfer mis Tachwedd gan gylchgrawn...
