Easily Wales’ most DRAMatic sculpture is Andy Hazell’s Wheel of Drams near the Hengoed Viaduct, Maesycwmmer, a village near Caerphilly.
Andy Hazell was commissioned to create a landmark sculpture to celebrate the refurbishment of the Hengoed Viaduct and its inclusion into the National Cycle Network. Wheel of Drams is a dramatic eight metre high circular sculpture of six curved steel coal drams that commemorate the original haulage companies that operated on the goods line that passed over the viaduct. The circular shape also represents the move from the route being used by coal drams to bicycles.
Although this is an eye-catching landmark sculpture it is slowly being obscured by trees growing in front of it.

Added Machen War Memorial to the Gallery here.
John Rawlins maintains a website dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Great War. From his website he writes : “Machen is a small village in South Wales that is situated half-way between the larger towns of Caerphilly and Newport
In 1914, the Parish of Machen comprised the villages of Upper and Lower Machen and Rhyd-y-Gwern. The combined population of the Parish was around 2,500. Like many similar villages in Wales, the impact of the Great War on the village of Machen must have been enormous. By mid 1916 there were over one hundred and fifty local men in the armed services, by the end of the war the figure would have been far greater. The loss of the 29 men who...

Photos from Caerphilly war memorial are now available in the Gallery.
The memorial is situated in the town centre, near a busy junction. It has the spectacular backdrop of Caerphilly Castle.
The memorial was unveiled in 1922 by the Earl of Plymouth.

A feathery delegation from Aberdare Park’s Ministry of Silly Walks recently flew southwards to Caerphilly to discuss a possible ‘twinning arrangement’.
The Aberdarian delegation were keen to tread carefully near Caerphilly Castle, home to a much larger population of Canada Geese and other wild fowl.
Caerphilly Castle is one of the largest fortresses of its type in Europe and was built around 1268.
The local population of wild birds enjoy a spectacular backdrop and are very proud of their own brand of Silly Walks....
I've been wanting to teach Welsh for Adults for some years, but have always been put off by the fear that my knowledge of grammar (Welsh or English) is virtually nil. In recent years, Coleg Gwent, who are the main providers of of 'Welsh for Adults' in the south east have been very short of tutors, so I've been attending training sessions to become a tutor, with the hope of being given a class in September, ideally in the county of Caerphilly. As normal classes have now finished for the summer, there's no opportunity for me to sit in a class observing, but fortunately there was a summer school at The Hill. I had the chance to sit in two classes, one for complete beginners and one for students who'd already completed one ear of studyThere were classes for 7 different levels, and the...

Dragon's Eye
Plaid's position on independence and their reluctance to talk about it in the pre-election period was examined. Bethan Jenkins' comments in support of an independent Wales on her blog were contrasted with the complete absence of the issue from recent policy documents.
The possible devolution of policing to Wales was discussed with Rosemary Butler AM (Lab, Newport West) and Jenny Randerson AM (Lib Dem, Cardiff Central) speaking in support but Wayne David MP (Lab, Caerphilly) signalled that there was strong opposition to the move in the PLP.
Ron Davies and John Marek AM explained that while they weren't running under the Forward Wales banner it didn't mean the end for the party. Ron Davies argued that the tabloid scandals that have badgered him in the past were no longer...

According to today's South Wales Echo there is a general feeling of goodwill towards Ron Davies in Caerphilly but not too many people are planning to actually vote for him in May. Daniel Davies of the Press Association also has his doubts.
One man who needn't now worry about such things is Cllr Peter Davies (above) who has been kicked off the list of potential Tory Assembly candidates after he suggested that the Assembly should be scrapped. Read David Cornock on this story here and Peter Black AM......

From within his fortress Luke Young blogs on Ron Davies' return - as does Seren, Peter Black AM and Blamerbell.
Seren also asks whether the St. Athan announcement is all it's hyped up to be.
Alun Cairns AM thinks Rhodri is preparing for a bad result in May.
Tomos Livingstone weighs up how Blair's departure will affect the Assembly election but doesn't understand the fuss about Andrew Davies' anti-Plaid outburst.
Glyn Davies AM explores the idea of state funded political parties.
Nicholas Michael Morgan calls for Scandinavianisation not Balkanisation.
Matt Withers reports that Welsh Labour's campaign is having to run everything through London.
Peter Black AM notes that the Tories have finally got around to taking Peter Davies off their candidate list.
Blamerbell looks at the...

What a joke. Forward Wales only had four members to start with. Now, even they won't stand for the party. Ron Davies will contest the Caerphilly seat, but not on a Forward Wales ticket. Neither will 'Party Leader' John Marek, by all accounts.Makes a mockery of the party's motto "the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." Not when the sum of the parts is zero.Incidentally, Forward Wales' all-English website hasn't been updated since June 2006. Clearly a party going nowhere.UPDATE: I've just changed the title from 'Forward Wales in reverse' after realising BBC had gone with the same one. Blamerbell Briefs mug and t-shirt in the post to anyone who can come up with a better pun - I couldn't see beyond the blindingly...
