Cardiff go boom via Dancing the Polka With Miss El Cajon October 12th, 2008 at 19:20

It's that time of year again: the leaves are changing, the sunsets fall earlier, and the chill of autumn evenings are punctuated with explosions. Soon Britons will be setting fire to a Catholic bloke.Well, not exactly.Depending on how hot the girls were in your school, you may or may not have been paying attention on the day they mentioned Guy Fawkes. He was the chap who, more than 400 years ago, plotted to blow up Britain's Houses of Parliament with the king and most of the Protestant aristocracy inside. He failed, of course. But for his trouble he was tortured for several days, hanged and then cut into pieces. Afterward, it would appear that someone, somewhere, said to themselves: "You know, that was jolly good fun. But what with all the torturing and hanging and cutting into bits, I...

According to the European Capitals of Sport Association (Aces), several requirements of the award are showing a sense of enjoyment in exercise, a willingness to achieve, a sense of community, learning fair play and improvement of health. Cardiff Council said the city had been selected to host the £3m UK School Games and hopes the award will mean more money will be invested into facilities in Cardiff to encourage further sports development. Popstar James Fox and City players, Roger Johnson, Peter Whittingham, Joe Ledley and Darren Purse turned up to greet fans at HMV on Queen Street, Cardiff, yesterday, May 5th, for the single’s launch. City centre-back Roger Johnson said It’s a top tune and all the boys are behind it. I’m surprised to see so many people here but it’s wonderful support. Saturday 26 April, Assemble 1.30 pm, Cathays Park (opp. City Hall & National Museum) The Military Academy is funded by defence multi-nationals like Raytheon, the manufacturer of cluster-bombs, £14 billion is being spent on this huge complex when we need hospitals & schools. Needless to say the multinationals will be making a large profit on the scheme. Footie via Dancing the Polka With Miss El Cajon April 7th, 2008 at 11:59

image Portsmouth and Cardiff are in the FA Cup final. Anthony, if you are reading this you'll want to read up on these teams because this is the match you will be watching when you and Maggie come to visit. Travelling several thousand miles only to find yourself watching soccer in a pub may seem a bit silly, but this is non-negotiable. You will be supporting Cardiff City. This is equally non-negotiable. I'm not necessarily happy about it, but supporting the home team is a matter of health and safety in this country. In the United States, it is a cheeky thing to sit in a bar in one team's town and support the other team, but this isn't the United States; people here don't think it's funny to do that. They will hurt you on principle. For those of you playing along at home, there's this game called...

Cardiff City March On To Wembley F.A.Cup Semi-Final via cymru66 March 11th, 2008 at 12:11

image Cardiff City, the only Welsh football team to take the F.A.Cup out of England, impressively disposed of Barclays Premier League Middlesboro to book a semi-final trip to Wembley and give themselves every chance of making it all the way to the final for the first time in 81 years. Veteran Cardiff striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, admitted he could not believe he was heading for Wembley after helping to dump former club Middlesbrough out of the FA Cup. Hasselbaink admitted: I am going to Wembley and cannot believe it. I thought it would be a bad result for Chelsea to lose against Barnsley because I thought Middlesbrough would be more focused and determined. George Galloway shows his Respect via Smiling under Buses February 12th, 2008 at 22:00

In an artice rant about the proposed new Gaelic channel by the BBC, he only mentions to call the Gaelic language 'obscure' twice in the artice which was dissapointing.Language is a living thing or nothing at all if you ask me. And the rest of us, by a stroke of luck, are in possession of a tongue worth the weight of Ben Nevis in gold. This is often an argument used against any money being spent on the Welsh language, that it shouldn't be supported in any way by the state and that it should be left to fight it out with other languages, which is an argument that one can understand. But then he goes on to say:The English language is our greatest asset and the government spends far too little spreading it even wider. The money spend on Gaels and their obscure language could be spent by the...

Cardiff Web Scene Meetup, 26.2.08 via Smiling under Buses February 11th, 2008 at 12:32

I recently discovered a Facebook group for Cardiff Web Geeks. I liked the sound of what they were about:Hey there. Cardiff Geeks was recently formed due to the common feeling amongst many passionate geeks in Wales that there was a lack of community between them. We are comprised of researchers, computer scientists, web professionals and enthusiasts though are open to just about anyone who has an interest in the topics we discuss. While there's a strong (but very small) on-line community of Welsh speakers, usually referred to as the Rhithfro, there's no obvious Welsh (i.e about Wales) on-line scene, neither social or for business, something I find quite frustrating, but I suppose it's not all that surprising. Hopefully, this will change.I wasn't sure if Cardiff Geeks was still going, but...

A few turned out (see above) but I fear they were drowned out by the schools protests and insole court protest. In the end Elgan resigned rather than sit through an hours character assassination so the motion was withdrawn. Labour did raise the issue of reopening Wood St/St Mary's to private vehicles immediately following the vote a few months ago however. Senior Officers advise against it on safety grounds so that looks set to be the 'battle' for the next few months."Improve cycling for commuters in Cardiff, keep Bute Park open...

The things you learn from old ladies on buses via Dancing The Polka With Miss El Cajon November 6th, 2007 at 17:34

There is a street in Cardiff's Roath (a) neighbourhood named simply The Parade. It gets its name from the days when a girls' college was located on the eastern end of the road and a boys' college on the western end. The street was a popular place for the young men and women to see and be seen.Similarly, parallel street The Walk served as a quieter area for the students to meet, and, in the words of the old lady who told me all this, "do more than look at one another."(a) Roath, by the way, gets its name from the Irish word "ráth" (prosperity). The area was once home to an enormous Irish population. These days it is home to a load of students. I feel as if Cardiff lost something in that...

Yr hen ddinas via Dancing The Polka With Miss El Cajon October 30th, 2007 at 13:24

This city is only as old as the stories that are told about it.I learned recently that Cardiff was established by the Romans 1,952 years ago. Nobody appears to have been keeping records before the Romans showed, so as far as we know Caerdydd (a) is the oldest city (b) in Wales. You wouldn't really know that from walking around. On the surface, Cardiff often resembles St. Paul, Minn., with its relatively wide and tree-lined streets, architecture that tends not to date back more than 150 years and ample parking. It is a city that Welsh people, Welsh speakers in particular, are often eager to dismiss. This modern, always changing, historyless place; it's not the REAL Wales.Of course, in fact, it is. Like the real Wales -- whatever the hell that's supposed to mean -- it's history is...

Long-awaited tribute to David Lloyd George in Parliament Square via Aberdare Blog October 25th, 2007 at 12:02

image Cardiff recognised the contribution of David Lloyd George nearly fifty years ago with a prominent statue erected in Gorsedd Gardens, opposite the National Museum of Wales. It has taken London a lot longer to pay tribute. Today at 2pm a statue of David Lloyd George is being unveiled in Parliament Square. The Lloyd George Society explains the background : “in Parliament Square there is no memorial to Lloyd George there, nor in any other street or square in London. Hence the David Lloyd George Statue Appeal, a charitable trust, was set up to rectify this situation. HRH The Prince of Wales became royal patron and Professor Glynn Williams was chosen as sculptor by a panel of advisers under the chairmanship of Lord Heseltine.” Commenting on the unveiling of the statue of David...
