Going, going… soon to be gone. Maerdy Workmen’s Hall via Aberdare Blog October 17th, 2008 at 19:30

image Rhondda Cynon Taf Council confirmed today that demolition of Maerdy Workingmen’s Hall will begin soon. Built in 1905, the grand old building was an iconic symbol of Rhondda’s wealth based on the coalmining industry. The local Council plan to recycle as much of the remains of the building as possible. Several local organisations have already expressed an interest in reusing the old stone from the venue as soon as it is razed to the ground. Why not Share your Memories or Photos of the Hall ? Charles Sansbury’s Difficult Rocket Sculpture in Merthyr via Aberdare Blog October 6th, 2008 at 12:53

image This is a decidedly difficult sculpture. An imposing steel rocket-like structure on the edge of Merthyr town. When the late Charles Sansbury created this massive installation way back in 1975, little did he realise how unloved his gangly child would become. Logic and reason suggest that it is difficult not to notice this work at a height of approximately 20 feet. On the other hand most people don’t notice it. The sculpture was installed at the edge of Merthyr main car park, in front of Merthyr College, and at the entrance of the main footbridge leading into St Tydfil’s shopping centre. Although it was guaranteed a daily audience of thousands of passers-by, few noticed when it was recently moved to the Caegarw roundabout as part of a town landscaping project. And the colour...

Croeso / Welcome for Prince Charles in the Valley via Aberdare Blog June 26th, 2008 at 11:09

image The People of this Valley will extend a warm welcome to Prince Charles who will be visiting today as part of a Royal Tour. HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales is expected to visit the Welsh Whisky Company distillery in the village of Penderyn, set in the beautiful landscape of Brecon Beacons National Park. Prince Charles takes a deep interest in the important things in life : the people, the land and the food we grow. He is a knowledgeable farmer who has championed the environmental cause for many, many years. Thus we hope this Royal visit will encourage a greater interest in these subjects in Aberdare. We need to grow more of our own food in Aberdare and other former industrial areas and we need to husband and conserve the land and our resources more responsibly. In the...

how stuff gets made via beyond utility November 23rd, 2006 at 13:05

image I'm a sucker for seeing how things get made, so I have been picking my way through this site. It's irritatingly 'gee-whizzy' and at times, but that's not really surprising seeing as it is comming from the National Association of Manufacturers in America, but if you can overlook that, there is lots of good stuff. How they make duct tape ("I got chills") has to be regarded as a classic of it's genre. You will love it, inspite of yourself. Can't you feel the manufacturing...
