Atlas of True Names via A Welsh View December 5th, 2008 at 17:30

image The Atlas of True Names reveals the etymological roots, or original meanings, of the familiar terms on today's maps of the World and Europe. The 'True Names' of 1500 cities, countries, rivers, oceans and mountain ranges are displayed on these two fascinating maps - Europe and the Wolrd Using the map above, I'm located just down the road from the Dark Water Fort in the Land of Strangers, a principality in the Great Land of the Tattooed. That sounds so much better than Newport, Wales, UK. The 'True Names' site has information on how to purchase the maps and also have large images of the Great Land of the Tattooed (Britain) and the United States of the Home Ruler (US). Spiegel also has images from other regions of the world.......

Actes et Paroles via No Good Boyo September 22nd, 2008 at 06:56

Hardly anyone in Britain learns a foreign language these days apart from us glorious Welsh, and all we learn is English. There are objective reasons for this:All the foreign types your average Englishman meets either speak English or are eager to learn - Club 18-30/Saga/timeshare reps, Brazilian pre-opp transsexuals, Spanish policemen, Greek scam artists, Romanian au pairs/aspirant second wives, Polish barmaids, amusing gîte owners, Amsterdam dominatrices: they all speak commercial English. The main foreign language on offer in British schools is French, which is almost unpronounceable and spoken by unsavoury sorts - recalcitrant gîte owners, Belgian paedophiles, the Tontons Macoutes, advanced film-makers and the French. The only other languages on offer are either even harder (German and...

The World’s Disappearing Languages via A Welsh View September 20th, 2007 at 22:40

image "Every 14 days a language dies. By 2100, more than half of the more than 7,000 languages spoken on Earth—many of them never yet recorded—will likely disappear, taking with them a wealth of knowledge about history, culture, the natural environment, and how the human brain works." National Geographic has an interesting interactive map highlighting areas of the world where languages are disappearing and has plenty of interesting facts. Did you know that Nigeria has 500 different languages - 5% of the world's languages. See also: Languages Die, but Not Their Last......

This is carzy stuff via Smiling under Buses September 4th, 2007 at 15:16

image In Wales, when there's any suggestion by the public or campaigners that private companies should be covered by a Language Act that require them to provide some Welsh language service, we're told by politicans that we need to show there's a demand. How were supposed to do this they don't say - I assume we're all expected to write a letter to every busienss which we use or are likely to use sometime in the future. This will require a lot of pens and a lot of stamps, but it's something we have to do it seems.I remember reading about 14 year old Èric Bertran from Lloret de Mar, who in 2004 sent an e-mail to three companies who operate in Catalonia asking them to provide bilingual (Catalan/Spanish) labeling in their stores. He made the mistake of signing his e-mails with 'Army of the...

No Welsh please we’re British via Smiling under Buses June 12th, 2007 at 20:33

While visiting my parents for a few days I received a phone call from a colleauge saying that John from the Courts Service in londan had rang, wanting me to call back urgently. I've been called to do jury service next weekDwi wedi cael fy nghalw i fod ar reithgor yn yr wythnosau nesaf. The bilingual letter came informing me, and I naturally completed the Welsh side and returned the form. I then received an info pack which was mainly in Welsh, apart from a bilingual leaflet and a loss-of-earnings form in English only. As I work in a work place where Welsh is the normal language, I e-mailed (in Welsh) asking if I could have the Welsh version of the form. Anyway I rang john back and this is our discussion:Me: It's Rhys Wynne here, I understand you called my work wanting to speak to...

Language Provision via Culture, Alienation, boredom and Despair... March 20th, 2007 at 10:13

A report by the Council of Europe on how minority languages are treated by the State in the UK. The report stated that not enough is being done to meet the call for Welsh language education. Maybe it is time that ALL schools in Wales taught Welsh and English equally. Having one lesson of Welsh a week, like any other modern language in some schools, is doing the youth of Wales a great dis service. The report goes on to talk about language provision within the health service, where it states that the provision of welsh is patchy. It is about time the realisation of Iaith Pawb was acted upon, when will Wales be a truly bilingual nation?Posted by...
