Rhondda Cynon Taf Council have confirmed that around 100 trees are to be cut down in Aberdare Park… “for safety reasons”.
According to RCT Council, the elderly Leylandii conifers have been shedding branches across busy Cemetery Road, adjacent to the park.
They will be replaced later this year with a mixture of trees which will have brightly-coloured spring flowers, summer berries and vibrant shades in the autumn. These trees will attract wildlife and enhance the overall landscape of the park.
Staff from Rhondda Cynon Taf Parks division will begin removing the conifers in early......

Mid Wales Opera make a welcome return to the Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare when they perform Puccini’s La Bohème on Wednesday 7 November at 7.30pm.
La Bohème is one of Puccini’s most romantic and popular operas. Containing several of opera’s best-known arias and duets, La Bohème’s ravishingly beautiful music and the composer’s unique dramatic flair, combine brilliantly to portray the passions and laughter of the young bohemians in the story. Few other operas have its capacity to engage the audiences’ emotions so powerfully as the action swiftly and seamlessly flows from boisterous gaiety to heart-rending tragedy.
Set in Paris in 1830, La Bohème follows the lives and loves of a group of Bohemians residing in the Latin Quarter. Rodolfo, a poet living an impoverished life, meets...

At the annual Crafty Break at the Gorwelion Guide Centre Trefoil Guild members enjoyed many crafts. Amongst the members from all over Wales was an ex-Penderyn lady - Mrs. Eileen Short (now living in Mid Wales).
Lovespoon making under the instructions of Arthur from Cardiff was really popular (the wood chippings covering the floor was proof of this!).
Salt dough scuptures, delicate bead work, Christmas card making and decoration for Christmas trees, etc.
Barbara Howarth (organiser) and her small team must be congratulated for the success of these Crafty Breaks.

St Catherine’s Church in Pontypridd will echo this weekend to sounds inspired by the town’s historic railway line to Barry.”Tirwedd Soniarus”, a sonic installation created by artist Abby Sohn, can be experienced at the church in Gelliwastad Road on Saturday, September 22.
The work is the result of Sohn’s research into the industrial remains of the disused railway line from Trehafod to Barry Pier.
“I located the stations and signal boxes along the route using historical railway atlases and Ordinance Survey maps. The musical composition includes samples from interviews, railway signal bells and bell ringing. Chords and melodic phrases were formulated by relating these locations to the notes of the eight bells of St Catherine’s Church,” said...

The life of an inspirational writer who bought the countryside and scenes of Rhondda Cynon Taf to life has been celebrated at the annual Cordell Literary Festival.
RCT was one of six south Wales councils that worked together to organise the event, which is held every year to mark the achievements and contribution of Alexander Cordell.
It is 10 years since the famous author died, but his memories live on in his writings, tourism trails across the countryside featured in his novels and, of course, the festivals.
Song of the Earth, one of Sri Lankan-born Cordell’s novels, is partly set in Aberdare while This Sweet and Bitter Earth featured Tonypandy, Tylorstown and Pontypridd.
This year’s festival saw visitors bask in the sunshine while enjoying Tredegar Town Band, Kids r Us, Dawson...

“MY LAND’S SHORE” - the musical Wales has been waiting for
Music by Christopher J. Orton
Book & Lyrics by Robert Gould & Christopher J. Orton
In the aftermath of the Merthyr Rising of 1831, Richard Lewis (aka Dic Penderyn), an ordinary man of conviction and integrity carried along by the wheels of history in extraordinary times, became the first martyr of the Welsh working class. Now he becomes the central character in a new musical with a beautiful and powerful score by Christopher J. Orton (composer of the critically acclaimed 2006 concept album musical “Dracula”, starring “Les Miserables” veteran Michael McCarthy).
From August 3 to 5, 2007, “My Land’s Shore”, a new dramatically driven and musically breath-taking theatrical production will receive its world...

Proponents of ID cards and CCTV always emphasise that they will increase people's safety. We know that ID cards are rubbish at stopping serious crime, because serious criminals (as well as suicide bombers) can get ID cards to suit their needs.
But what about CCTV? The UK has 100,000 of them and we're likely to be filmed 300 times in any one day. Yet the brutal killer of five women in Ipswich is able to wander about with impunity with no CCTV footage to give a hint of his movements....
