Victory for Aberdare Sikh Excluded from School via Aberdare Blog July 29th, 2008 at 23:42

Today the High Court awarded victory to Sarika Singh, a Sikh schoolgirl, who was excluded from school for wearing a religious bangle. The human rights group Liberty, representing 14-year-old Sarika Singh, successfully argued that Aberdare Girls’ School breached race relations and equality laws by excluding her since November 2007 for wearing the kara (a plain single bangle widely accepted as a central tenet of the Sikh race and religion). Sarika Singh, of mixed Welsh/Punjabi origin, has been raised in the Sikh faith and was the only Sikh at the Aberdare Girls’ School. The school’s uniform policy prohibits the wearing of any jewellery other than a wrist watch and plain ear studs. When the school noticed that Singh was wearing the kara, she was isolated for two months, including...

Mumbo Jumbo Cult Claims Merthyr AM via Aberdare Blog July 9th, 2008 at 15:54

image It is with considerable sadness we announce that Huw Lewis AM has joined the Mumbo Jumbo Cult. On 3rd July 2008, he announced on his blog that he has “joined the revolution”. This is a common phrase chanted by new Cult Members as they ritually affirm that they belong to their new ‘family’. The Mumbo Jumbo Cult has swept through the Welsh political landscape claiming many other Assembly Member casualties. Symptoms of Cult Membership include excessive references to brand names and imagery in a not-very-subtle attempt to recruit more people to the Mumbo Jumbo ’cause’. Huw Lewis History On July 18th 2007, Huw Lewis was sacked as Deputy Minister for Transport and the Economy. Two months later he published his Winning for Wales pamphlet on the future...

image The People of this Valley will extend a warm welcome to Prince Charles who will be visiting today as part of a Royal Tour. HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales is expected to visit the Welsh Whisky Company distillery in the village of Penderyn, set in the beautiful landscape of Brecon Beacons National Park. Prince Charles takes a deep interest in the important things in life : the people, the land and the food we grow. He is a knowledgeable farmer who has championed the environmental cause for many, many years. Thus we hope this Royal visit will encourage a greater interest in these subjects in Aberdare. We need to grow more of our own food in Aberdare and other former industrial areas and we need to husband and conserve the land and our resources more responsibly. In the...

She contributed a persuasive anecdote concerning her recent trip to South Africa… While I was in South Africa a few weeks ago, Zimbabwean refugees handed me a note for 10 million Zimbabwean dollars. That buys a bag of tomatoes in Zimbabwe. Now Mugabe is prepared to starve his people to death for their votes. What kind of human being is President Mugabe ? - Source Hansard, via TheyWorkForYou. image Aberdare’s MP Ann Clwyd ponders being “the only woman from Wales here for 14 years” at the House of Commons this week. Her contributions came in a debate on International Women’s Day at the House of Commons on Thursday, 6 March 2008. Speaking in the House, Ann Clwyd MP says : “I am pleased to see all the women in the House, because I know from personal experience how difficult it has been for women to be elected. I was the only woman from Wales here for 14 years, so like my right hon. and learned Friend the Minister, I am pleased to see more women in the House. It was a long fight; there had been only three women MPs from Wales before I was elected in 1984, two of whom were daughters of famous men. One was Lloyd George’s daughter, and the other was the...

High Court grants Hearing for Aberdare Sikh Schoolgirl via Aberdare Blog January 25th, 2008 at 17:35

The High Court has decided to hear the case of 14-year-old Sarika Singh, excluded from Aberdare Girl’s School for wearing a Sikh religious bangle. The human rights group Liberty will argue that the school has breached race relations and human rights laws, as well as a 25-year-old Law Lords’ decision which allows Sikh children to wear items representing their faith, including turbans, to school. Anna Fairclough, Liberty’s Legal Officer representing the Singhs, said: “Nothing less than our traditions of religious freedom and racial tolerance are on trial in this case. Individuals from any religion who wish to modestly express their faith should not be denied a proper education as Ms Singh has.” Singh, of mixed Welsh/Punjabi origin, has been brought up in the Sikh faith and is the...
