image Photos are now in the Gallery of of Bethel (Wesleyan Methodist) Chapel, Mount Road, Cefn Rhigos, near Hirwaun. Built in 1839 in the northernmost reaches of the Cynon Valley, in the quiet rural village of Rhigos. There is seating for 120. The design is plain and simple. Surely that is the hallmark of good design and a recipe for Chapel longevity ? How many of the Chapels of Cynon Valley, and indeed, Wales, have closed due to the huge costs of maintaining complex building structure......

image Now that Tower Colliery has finally closed, the new language that has been incubating there during the past thirteen or so years finally emerges. Tyrone O’Sullivan and Tower Colliery shareholders now speak the language of business development and exploitation, the language of managers of men and land, of balance sheets, profit and bottom lines. Over the past year or so, stories have been drip-fed via the corporate press about possible developments at the Tower site after its closure, including entrepreneurial-sounding visions for a waste processing plant, a housing and retail development, a museum and a range of other schemes. Here’s a video clip of a paraglider ‘jumping off’ Rhigos Mountain yesterday. It’s near Craig y Llyn, the highest summit in Glamorgan. There are splendid views of Rhigos and Hirwaun from this lofty ledge. Tower Colliery is nearby, although it it expected to close this month. The photographs were taken at the recent ceremony to unveil a plaque and officially re-open Hirwaun Scout Hall after a work was undertaken funded by a grant from Amgen Environmental Body (AEB) Ltd. Amgen is an organisation set up under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and was designed to allow Landfill Operators an opportunity to re-invest in their local communities and surrounding areas. Early in 2006 a project application to obtain funding for the complete refurbishment of the hall was received by AEB from the Officers of the Hirwaun Scouts Hall. A new operator - Clarkes Coaches of Tredegar - has taken over the operation of the Aberdare-Rhigos Rail Link bus service (from December 11, 2006) to coincide with the start of the 2006/07 Winter rail timetable. This service provides residents in the Upper Cynon Valley with a dedicated link and through ticketing to the rail network at Aberdare.
