I saw this fake statue street performer whilst in London on the weekend. He was so real looking that the pigeons were attracted to him. At first there was just one on his shoulder but another landed on his head. He climbed down for a rest and the pigeons stayed close to him. I presume that they were waiting for him to climb back up....
I'm pretty well-travelled when it comes to beer but I've never come across a Dirty Hoe. It's a combination of Guinness and Hoegaarden that appears to split well. I wonder if it always turns out like that. [via]...

An essay by Professor Dave Adamson reported in the Western Mail today concludes that the impact of government policy in reducing poverty in Wales in the past 12 years has been “at best marginal”.Professor Adamson, who helped shape the Welsh Assembly Government’s Communities First initiative, claims:There has been little change in poverty levels in many communities since 1996; Many adults in deprived areas expect to be limited by illness and this illness is not always due to industrial disease;Educational failure is the foundation of poverty in Wales, and;It was difficult to see any specific impact from WAG policies on poverty. The most interesting part of these conclusions relates to the failure of educational policy. We have long known that too many young people leave school without...
Via Justin Webb, there's a mildly interesting survey on Britons' attitudes toward Americans. The survey was commissioned by what appears to be a nutjob pro-USA website. The question I have is why it matters what Britons think.I mean, sure, on a person-to-person level it matters. I don't really enjoy it when someone looks me in the face and tells me that they hate Americans, but is it really necessary to commission a survey to prove them wrong? And it's not like the average American's perceptions of the rest of the world are any more informed. The other night, the child bride spent several minutes on the phone trying to explain to her father that we in Britain are not watching NBC's coverage of the Olympics. But there you are. The thing I found mildly interesting was the perception that...

Mwy na digon trahaus ydwyf i allu dweud y galla i wisgo fel y mynnaf ac edrych yn weddol gall. Iawn, mi gyfaddefaf, nid goth o’r radd flaenaf y byddwn, ond dwi’n iawn efo popeth arall, fwy neu lai. Ces i gopi o'r 'Rough Guide to Wales' fel anrheg heddiw, sy'n amserol iawn gan ein bod ni'n mynd lawr i ardal Llanberis am ychydig o ddyddiau dydd mercher. Pob tro dwi'n gweld teithlyfrau am Gymru (mewn siop llyfr fel arfer), dyma fi'n ffeindio fy hun yn eu chwilota am son am y Gymraeg (neu diffyg son!). Faswn i wedi disgwyl i'r 'ryff gaed' tynnu sylw a dangos parch i iaith lleafrifol, a ces i mo fy siomi wrth bodio trwy'r cyfrol am tro cyntaf. A dweud y gwir teimlais roedd y teithlyfr wedi gor-bwysleisio cryfder sefyllfa'r Gymraeg trwy dweud pethau fel: 'magazines, newspapers and websites in the old language are mushrooming'. Mae'n amlwg mi gafodd y pennod am yr iaith ei sgwennu cyn i freuddwyd pabur dyddiol 'Y Byd' dod i ben.

Nid oes polisi cadarn ar y Wicipedia Cymraeg ynglŷn (ar hyn o bryd!) a derbyn delweddau nad ydynt yn rhydd, yn wahanol iawn i'r Wikpedia Saesneg sydd ond eisiau delweddau rhydd - oni bai eu bod yn cwrdd a meini prawf arbennig.Mae'r Llyfrgell yn caniadau i'r delweddau (o gasgliad John Thomas yn unig), gael eu defnyddio ar y Wicipedia, ond nid oes hawl wedyn i'r delweddau gael eu defnyddio unrhyw le arall heb ganiatad. Mae'r llyfrgell yn gofyn pa ddelweddau sydd eu heisiau. Mae modd gwneud cais ar dudalen sgwrs y Llyfrgell. Dyma rai o'r delweddau sydd wedi eu llytho hyd...

After probably six months or so of being out of action, I finally decided to take a look at the bug that was causing comments on Hintofsarcasm not to work.
I realised that I made a decision some time ago to change the name of the comment post script, wp-comments-post.php to something that the spam-bots could not get their hands on so easily and install a captcha.
When I removed this captcha system in favour of a hash based JS plugin I completely forgot that I had set all requests for wp-comments-post.php to redirect to Google, so, after deleting the file and re-uploading it a couple of times, checking out the database and the form I finally got a lightbulb above my head and remembered the redirect. Duh.
So, you can all go ahead and start commenting again. That means you, Dan.

Double congratulations to Welsh rower Tom James for (a) playing his part in the tremendous gold medal winning performance in the Beijing Olympics Coxless Fours and (b) for proudly posing with the Welsh flag following the awards ceremony!
Link to photograph.
Of course, due to the crazy ruling by Chinese authorities, Tom risks disqualification for displaying the Welsh flag; Wales being a country not individually represented at the games.
Personally, I hope Tom doesn’t get into trouble for his public display of national pride. I also loved the fact his parents predicted the slight bending of the rules in a Daily Post interview several days ago:
The couple may bend the rules a bit and fly a Welsh flag rather than a Union Jack.

When a colleague, himself recently returned from Las Vegas, asked about my holiday plans for touring Colorado and Utah he said, “I suppose you’ve booked all your hotels“.

We've been away for a few days, so without any further ado I return to the important business of listing films in no particular order.Ninth Night: Quatermass and the PitI'd rather have the 1950s TV series, but that would be cheating. It was the best thing the BBC did before giving me a job.The 1960s Hammer film doesn't have the relentless build-up of the original, but also skips its occasional preachiness. The ending, with Quatermass and his female assistant unable to speak across the space between them in the ruins of London, is one of the most powerful in postwar British cinema, genre movie or no genre movie. It's all up on YouTube, but here's the section that includes the cleansing of the Martian hives (at '1"30):Key quotation: Minister: "Do you know what you're implying? That we owe...
These photographs of Red Campion (Silene dioica) were taken at my previous smallholding in Wales. It is small, somewhat spindly plant that grows in the meadows and hedgerows. It does have an attractive red-pink flower. I find that I prefer the wild flowers over the highly hybridised modern garden plants that are, for me, too 'showy'.This first photo shows the complete flower head of two adjacent flowers. This, and the other photographs were taken in my cardboard box studio that has black card as a background. The purpose of the second image was to show leaf and stem detail, as well as the side view of the flower heads. Like many of the wild flower plants I have photographed, the stems are slightly hairy which show up quite will in the flash lighting used.In this third photo, I am showing...

Daeth sawl cyfnod ac eiliad i’m rhan pan ddywedais na fedrwn i droi yn unigolyn rhyfeddach, ond yn ddiweddar mae fy nhuedd i olrhain alcohol gydag obsesiwn mewn bod yn Babydd yn dro od, a dweud y lleiaf. Maent yn bethau rhyfedd i'w cyfuno, ond dwi'n llwyddo gwneud, rhywsut. Bob tro y byddaf yn feddw, dwisho bod yn Gatholig. Ydi hynny'n naturiol?Dwi wedi hen gyrraedd y cam yn fy mywyd lle nad ydw i’n adnabod fy hun yn chwil. Y peth gwaethaf ydi’r ffaith nad ydi fy ffôn lôn yn cadw nodau bodyn a anfonwyd yn ei gof, felly nid yn anaml y bydda i’n cael negeseuon yn dweud “ffyc off” neu “hahaha” y bore wedyn, a heb fath o syniad pam.Prin iawn y proffwydais y byddwn byth yn dweud hyn, ond mae’r tueddiad tuag at yr absẃrd ac od hyn yn fy chwildod yn peri i mi feddwl y dylwn...

Dwi’n gwybod nad ydw i wedi gorffen dweud stori’r eisteddfod eto, ond mae’r amser wedi hedfan a dwi’n mynd bant ar daith arall heddiw. Dwi’n mynd am wythnos i Ddwyrain Anglia i aros yn ninas Norwich. Mae gen i raglen lawn o lefydd i ymweld â hwy. Os dwi’n dod o hyd i gysylltiad rhyngrwyd dwi’n siŵr o geisio adrodd ychydig o’r hanes. Os nad ydw i, bydd yn rhaid aros am wythnos er mwyn gwneud hynny.

This morning's Western Mail carries news of the rather limited survey being conducted on-line by South Wales Police. This use of new technology is unfortunately compromised by a poor understanding of its potential and a failure to think through why the survey is being carried out and how it can improve Police performance. If you click on the section entitled 'Your Comments Count' it transpires that this is only the case if you are prepared to agree that the service offered by the Police is excellent. At no point is there an opportunity to express any other opinion on the force’s service. As I pointed out to the paper, every time I have had an opportunity to contact police, I have had a very good service and I don’t want to undermine their work in local communities. But any survey...
A memorandum by the Welsh Affairs Select Committee calling for a cut in the number of bids by the Welsh Assembly Government and AMs for more powers have received short shrift from the Presiding Officer. In a letter to the Secretary of State for Wales released today, he makes it clear that the idea that the current volume of proposed Orders is "swamping the system, both at Westminster and in the Assembly" is "clearly contrary to the evidence".He writes: "The Assembly acquired its new legislative powers on the 25 May 2007. During the first twelve months following that date, 7 proposed LCOs were laid before the Assembly, five of which were proposed by the Assembly Government and two by back-benchers. As the memorandum itself makes clear, only four of these proposed Orders have as yet been...

I'm in a bit of an annoying position at the moment, both the new cameras we had in the last year have packed in. My Sony has been playing up pretty much since the first time it was taken to the beach, and has now decided to work only about 20% of the time. We went to London two weeks ago, so I took the Canon I gave to my wife. Half way...
